What is Risograph Printing?

Risograph machines differ from standard printers because they use rotary stencil duplicating technology. This means they print duplicates made from a stencil of your original print and each color of your design must be isolated into it’s own stencil. Riso essentially functions like a screen printer but look like a xerox machines.

Eco-friendly Printing

Riso is one of the most eco-friendly forms of printing. The machine is energy efficient, free from harmful emissions, and has minimal waste. Riso is a wet process which means the ink comes out wet and doesn’t need to get heat-set—it also means the inks never fully dry.

Inks

Riso uses soy-based non-toxic inks which are better for the environment. The inks are slightly translucent which results in color mixing to create larger color palettes.

Printing Process

The riso works by interpreting your artwork into a black and white image, then it burns that image into perforated holes on a stencil. That stencil is wrapped around the drum that is inserted in the machine. Paper is fed through the machine, ink is pressed through your stencil, which then prints your artwork onto your paper at high speeds.

Printing Quirks

Riso is far from a perfect process and forces you to embrace imperfection like:

SMUDGING Inks come out wet and never fully dry. They may smudge on your finger or on the backs of your prints.

COVERAGE Inks can be slightly inconsistent between prints. Also, ink that is too heavy may pool. Keep opacities below 90% to fix this.

TRACKING Wet ink can be picked up from previous print by the feed tire and track tire marks down the center of your print.

REGISTRATION Riso prints one color at a time, so each color must be registered to the previous color to get them to line up properly. Registration methods include trapping, knockout, and overlay.
